As we enter the final 10 days of racing for Season 56, it is time to take a quick look at who might win the NZ national title. The current top 10 reads like a who's who of current NZ riders:
490 Mealamu (Icecat)
410 Tuimavave (Willunga Hill)
380 Koopu (Willunga Hill) -- 2 times on the podium
340 C.Durbridge (Mali Mountain Men)
340 Park (Velo Kiwi) -- Season 51 champion, 4 times on the podium
290 Blacka (Designa Legends PPDB) -- Season 55 champion
260 Cayless (Temora Tornadoes)
256 Puletua (The Laboratory)
236 Covell (Velo Kiwi) -- Season 48,49,52 champion, 7 times on the podium
188 Lonesborough (Clenbuterol Cheats)
Other notables:
130 McCracken (Australian Warlord) -- Season 54 champion
0 Alexander Tony (Willunga Hill) -- Season 50,53 champion
As the standings show, none of the current top 3 have previously won the Kiwi title, but Icecat's Warren Mealamu must be viewed as a very strong favorite at this time, especially since Koopu and Tuimavave are unlikely to lead a Willunga Hill race day squad again this season.
Of the rest, Velo Kiwi's Ruben Park and last season's champ Fuifui Blacka certainly should not be discounted. Finn McCracken, the aging super-TTer from Australian Warlord, was expected to make a last push but results earlier today in the Epreuve de Temps de Monaco, where McCracken disappointed with a 16th, means he cannot possibly close in on the podium. Another previous national champion, Alexander Tony of Willunga Hill, is presently in a last-hurrah top form and aiming for a result in the Div 2 cup Coppa della Famiglia del Don but seems unlikely to be able to pull enough points from a single top form sequence to challenge.
Special mention should also go to Clenbuterol Cheat's Emosi Lonesborough, who has had a break out season for the National Team, garnering 300 points and helping to push Team NZ near an all-time WT season record tally.
